Can You Reuse Key Fobs?

Do you have old key fobs lying around? Have you ever wondered if you can reuse them? After all, these things should serve more use than simply sitting in a drawer somewhere.

The easy answer is that you can reuse old key fobs, but it may not be quite as simple as it sounds. However, with a bit of guidance, you can do so on your own. Continue reading to find out how you can do this yourself.

How to Reprogram a Key Fob

  • 1.

To reprogram your key fob, you will need to start by replacing the batteries in the key fob.

  • 2.

Once you have replaced the batteries in the key fob, you will need to remove the battery cables on your vehicle and wait for about 30 seconds to one minute before replacing them. This will reset the vehicle’s computer so that you can work on the reprogramming of the key fob.

  • 3.

Get inside your vehicle and make sure that all of the doors are closed. You will need to put the key into the ignition and turn it, but do not turn the ignition on. You simply want the electronic components of the vehicle to come on.

  • 4.

You will want to press the lock button on the key fob while your key is in the ignition. Then turn the ignition completely off.

  • 5.

Turn the ignition back on, but again, you just want to turn the key over, not actually start the engine, so that just the electrical system comes on.

  • 6.

Now, you will want to press the button again and turn the ignition off and back on.

  • 7.

You will need to complete this action a total of three times. This means you will need to press the button and turn the ignition off three full times. These steps allow your car to save the data that this key fob is connected to your car key.

  • 8.

You should hear the sound of the door locking. This means that you have completed the previous steps correctly and that the car or vehicle is in programming mode. When you hear this sound, you will want to press the lock button again immediately so that the step is complete and the programming is finished. You only have 10 seconds after hearing this sound, so you must move fast.

  • 9.

Removing the key from the ignition finishes the process. It is very important to test the fob and see if it works while being sure not to lock yourself out of the car. Reprogramming does not always work the first time, so you may need to try a couple of times to get it to work right for you.

*A Note About Timing*

Keep in mind throughout this process that it is all about timing when you are reprogramming a key fob. You only have a ten-second window to save the reprogrammed information by pushing the correct button.

Of course, everything must follow the exact sequence correctly to work also. If it doesn’t work the first time, you may need to try it again to get it to work.

What If Reprogramming a Key Fob Doesn’t Work?

Reprogramming doesn’t always work on key fobs. Sometimes it really is because of user error, but it may often also be that the key fob is somehow damaged or broken. For example, if it has been in a drawer for a long time, who knows what might have happened to it?

So, reusing old key fobs for your car is somewhat of a possibility if you know how to reprogram them, but the process isn’t quite as simple as it seems and not everyone who has key fobs lying around wants or needs to reuse them.

So what can you do with an old key fob to get some value out of it instead of tossing it in the trash? You can sell your key fob for cash, the process is fast and easy.

Sell Your Key Fobs for Cash

When businesses that use a lot of key fobs start to look around, they might notice they have more key fobs than they think.

Are you a car dealership with dozens of old, lost, and found keys lying at the bottom of your key tag board? Or an auto body shop that has keys in a drawer from cars you have fixed over the years, some that perhaps you even changed?

There are lots of ways a company can end up collecting key fobs over the years. But, no matter how you ended up with that box or drawer or container of key fobs, you can rest assured that your key fobs have a lot of value.

Why You Should Sell Your Key Fobs

The best reason to sell your key fobs is that it will make you extra money. But, unfortunately, those keys aren’t doing anything for you in a drawer. Selling your overstock or used key fobs will put money back in your pocket with almost no time or effort on your part. In addition, you are rid of junk keys you won’t use, and you get money for them, so everyone wins!
